The Department carries out conservation of  artefacts executed in a variety of techniques  from all periods. They are mostly objects made of iron and  non-iron metals, pottery, and artefacts made of stone, bone, wood, glass and amber.

The staff of the Department carry out technological and conservationist research, and prepare documentation and opinions concerning the state of preservation of the artefacts. They also supervise preparatory work for arrtefacts’ transport and are involved in their packaging and shipping. The unit also conducts student training courses and internships.
